Each player starts with 16 pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns. These pieces each move uniquely. The goal is to checkmate your opponent's king by placing it in an inescapable attack. Alternatively, a player may resign if they've lost significant material or face inevitable checkmate.
