Halma, also known as Ugolki or куточки уголки, is a captivating strategy board game that has been entertaining players since its invention in 1883 or 1884 by George Howard Monks, an American thoracic surgeon at Harvard Medical School. Inspired by the English game called Hoppity, Halma has evolved into a beloved offline strategy game.
The game is played on a checkered board with pieces typically in black and white for two-player games, and in various colors or other distinctions for four-player games. These pieces are initially placed on opposing corners of the board. The objective is to move all of one's pieces from their starting camp to the camp located in the opposing corner. Players can advance by moving a single piece to an adjacent open square or by jumping over one or more pieces in sequence.
