Japanese Mahjong is an engaging game that follows a unique set of rules, providing players with a strategic and enjoyable experience. To play, you'll use a slider located at the bottom of the screen to select tiles. Once you've chosen your tile, a simple tap on the slider will discard it, setting the stage for your next move.
The ultimate goal of Mahjong is to complete your hand, which consists of four Melds and one Pair. An example of a completed hand could look like this: \[1, 2, 3\]\[6, 6, 6\]\[6, 7, 8\]\[N, N, N\]\[4, 4\]. However, it's important to note that not all hands are valid if you use Chi, Pon, or Open Kan. Specifically, be cautious when using 1 and 9 in Chi and Pon, as these can invalidate your hand.
In Japanese Mahjong, having at least one valid hand is essential. You can enhance your hand by declaring Reach, which costs 1,000 points but can significantly improve your chances of winning. Keep in mind, though, that you cannot declare Reach if you've already used Chi, Pon, or Open Kan. A closed hand, one that has not been exposed through these actions, will yield higher points upon winning.
Understanding the concept of a Lost Hand is crucial. This occurs when your hand is Waiting but cannot win off another player's discard because you've already discarded a winning tile. Even if you have all the necessary tiles, if you've discarded a potential winning tile, you'll have a Lost Hand. However, you can still win with a self-draw, even if you have a Lost Hand.
A key strategy is to avoid Ron (winning off another player's discard) by tiles you've discarded. Always be mindful of the tiles you're discarding, as they can influence your ability to win from another player's hand. The knack is to carefully reason through the other players' discards to determine the best way to complete your hand and secure victory.
