If you're looking for a captivating board game experience for two players, the mancala family of games offers a rich variety of strategic challenges. Originating from ancient times, these games are traditionally played with small stones, beans, or seeds, and involve rows of holes or pits on a board or in the earth. The primary objective across the various mancala games, such as oware, bao, and omweso, is to capture all or some of your opponent's pieces. Here, we'll dive into two popular mancala games: Kalah and Oware, both of which can be enjoyed with a standard mancala board featuring 6 small pits (houses) on each side and a large pit (store or end zone) at each end.

Kalah Rules:

Kalah is a strategic delight that starts with four to six seeds placed in each house. Each player controls the six houses on their side of the board, and their score is determined by the number of seeds in their store to the right.

  1. Players take turns sowing their seeds. On a turn, a player removes all seeds from one of their houses and moves counter-clockwise, dropping one seed in each house, including their own store but not their opponent's.
  2. If the last sown seed lands in an empty house owned by the player, and the opposite house contains seeds, both the last seed and the opposite seeds are captured and placed into the player's store.
  3. If the last sown seed lands in the player's store, the player gets an additional move. There's no limit to the number of moves a player can make in their turn.
  4. The game ends when one player no longer has any seeds in any of their houses. The other player then moves all remaining seeds to their store, and the player with the most seeds in their store wins.

Oware Rules:

Oware, another engaging mancala variant, also starts with four to six seeds in each house. The gameplay involves strategic sowing and capturing, with each player controlling the six houses on their side of the board.

  1. On a turn, a player removes all seeds from one of their houses and distributes them counter-clockwise, dropping one seed in each house, but not into the end scoring houses or the house from which the seeds were taken. If a house contained 12 or more seeds, it's skipped, and the twelfth seed is placed in the next house.
  2. Capturing occurs when a player brings the count of an opponent's house to exactly two or three with the final seed sown in that turn. This captures the seeds in the corresponding house, and possibly more if the previous-to-last seed also brought an opponent's house to two or three, continuing until a house is reached that doesn't contain two or three seeds or doesn't belong to the opponent. The captured seeds are placed in the player's scoring house.
  3. If an opponent's houses are all empty, the current player must make a move that gives the opponent seeds. If no such move is possible, the current player captures all seeds in their own territory, ending the game.
  4. The game concludes when one player has captured more than half the seeds, or if each player has taken half the seeds, resulting in a draw.
