Fresh calls for a new Star Wars Battlefront game gain momentum thanks to an actor from the critically-acclaimed TV series Andor.
Over the past month, fans have been returning to 2017's Star Wars Battlefront 2, driving the game to its highest Steam player count in years—despite developer DICE having ended support long ago.
Muhannad Ben Amor, who portrays the heroic Wilmon Paak in Andor, has now joined the campaign for a full-fledged sequel via social media.
"Star Wars needs to give us Battlefront 3 ASAP," Amor posted on Instagram (via Comicbook), sharing that he has logged 469 hours in Battlefront 2. Impressive, but let's not get overconfident.
"I grew up with Battlefront 2—I've been a veteran since day one," Amor added. "Let's HOPE Battlefront 3 becomes a reality."
Star Wars Battlefront 2's recent surge in popularity coincides with the thrilling finale of Andor's second season, along with other Star Wars events tied to the franchise’s annual May 4 celebrations.
After years of averaging roughly 2,000 concurrent players on Steam, the game's numbers have been steadily rising over recent weeks, now approaching its all-time peak of 10,000 concurrent players.
But does this increased interest make a Star Wars Battlefront 3 more likely? For now, DICE is fully focused on developing and polishing its next major Battlefield release. A full reveal of the still-untitled Battlefield game, currently in player testing, is anticipated this summer.
DICE may still hesitate to revisit the series after Battlefront 2's initial launch was marred by a major loot box controversy. Over time, however, public opinion of the game has improved. And while publisher EA—DICE's owner—is no longer the sole developer of Star Wars games, Respawn Entertainment continues to work on a third installment in the Star Wars Jedi series.
"Star Wars Battlefront 2 delivers a redemption story worthy of the Skywalker saga," IGN noted in its 2019 re-review. "Overall, it offers a compelling package that stands as one of the most exciting ways to experience an authentic Star Wars adventure."
