April 1 has passed, and with it, the gaming industry's tradition of April Fool's Day pranks. However, the jest from the Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 team might linger in fans' minds for a while.
Yesterday, Focus Entertainment, the publisher of Space Marine 2, announced a fictional Chaplain class as DLC, set for release on April 1.
“In story mode, replace Titus with The Chaplain for a true Codex-compliant Ultramarine experience,” Focus teased, likely chuckling from their offices.
This mock ‘DLC’ introduced a new playable character to the campaign, complete with an ‘Enhanced Dialogue System.’ Every five minutes, The Chaplain would declare, “The Codex Astartes forbids this action,” and “I’ll report this to the Inquisition.”
The Chaplain’s special ability, Discipline, instantly flags “any minor violations of the Codex Astartes for a 5% discipline boost (but a -20% brotherhood penalty).
The humor lands because players of Space Marine 2’s campaign know Chaplain Quintus scrutinizes Titus’ every action for heresy, despite Titus’ unwavering loyalty to the Imperium, the Ultramarines, and the Emperor.
As Titus fights Tyranids and the Thousand Sons traitor legion, it’s evident he’s unique in some way, which Chaplain Quintus deeply distrusts. He’s like an overzealous hall monitor, quick to report any hint of nonconformity. Fans love to hate him.
The Chaplain has become a meme in the Space Marine community, and this April Fool’s prank plays into that. Yet, some fans genuinely want The Chaplain as a playable warrior-priest, devoted to the Emperor, though perhaps without this exact skill set.
“This would be epic if real,” posted ResidentDrama9739 on the Space Marine subreddit, sparking lively discussions about how The Chaplain could fit into the game.
In fact, Space Marine 2 is getting a new class soon. Focus and developer Saber Interactive haven’t revealed details, but fans speculate it could be the Apothecary, a medic-like role, or the Librarian, wielding warp-powered magic. Does The Chaplain’s prank appearance rule him out?
Despite the surprise reveal of Space Marine 3’s development, Space Marine 2’s year one roadmap continues. Patch 7 is due mid-April, with a new class, PvE operations, and melee weapons planned for the coming months.
