In the vast and treacherous Forbidden Lands of *Monster Hunter Wilds*, you'll encounter a variety of formidable beasts, each presenting a unique challenge. Among these, Uth Duna stands out as a leviathan-type monster you'll meet early in the game. To help you conquer this beast and claim its valuable rewards, here's a detailed guide on how to beat and capture Uth Duna.

How to Unlock Uth Duna in Monster Hunter Wilds

Uth Duna makes its first appearance in the **Scarlet Forest** during the mission questline of Chapter 1. After you've triumphed over other notable foes such as Lala Barina and Congalala, you and your companion Alma will need to rendezvous with Olivia and Erik, who are investigating a nearby dam. However, as the weather takes a dramatic turn, Uth Duna will reveal itself amidst a raging monsoon during **Mission 1-5: Beyond the Deluge**. Your primary objective at this point will be to defeat this beast before it wreaks further havoc.

How to Beat and Capture Uth Duna in Monster Hunter Wilds

Uth Duna, known as **‘A Feast in the Deep’**, emerges when the waters in the Scarlet Forest reach perilous levels. As the region’s apex predator, battling it will be significantly more challenging than the monsters you've faced so far in the story.

Before engaging Uth Duna, it's advisable to equip a **thunder-element weapon**, obtainable from Rey Dau in Mission 2-2. If you don't have one, opt for gear or a Talisman like the **Water Charm I** to boost your water resistance. Additionally, prepare a hearty meal to keep your Health and Stamina up, and don't forget to bring **Nulberries** to counteract the **Waterblight** status ailment Uth Duna can inflict.

Uth Duna Attacks and Weaknesses

When facing Uth Duna, pay close attention to its iridescent fins on its legs and tail, known as the **‘Veil’**. These fins temporarily increase the monster's defense but slow it down. Damaging the veil enough will cause the fins to retract, making Uth Duna more vulnerable to attacks on its weak points, including its **Head (breakable), Mouth, Tail (breakable), and both Forelegs (breakable)**.

However, once the veil is gone, Uth Duna becomes more aggressive and unleashes its attacks more frequently. You'll need to stay agile while navigating the water. Uth Duna’s attacks primarily involve its massive size to cause significant damage and create waves to hinder your movement. Key attacks to watch out for include:

  • **Belly Slam** – Uth Duna rears up on its back legs, exposing its belly, and then falls forward to slam the ground.
  • **Roar** – Like other monsters, Uth Duna can emit a roar that temporarily immobilizes you.
  • **Body Coil** – Uth Duna coils its body, spins, and then lashes out with its tail in a swiping motion.
  • **Aerial Twirl** – Mimicking a whale's leap, Uth Duna performs a twirling jump into the air and slams back down, covering a wide area.
  • **Leg Swipe** – When engaged at close range, Uth Duna may swipe at you with its clawed feet.

After defeating Uth Duna at least once, you can check its weaknesses in the Field Guide for future encounters.

Should You Capture or Kill Uth Duna?

As with previous *Monster Hunter* games, you have the option to either capture or kill Uth Duna at the end of the battle. To capture it, you must weaken the monster until it's "tired" or "exhausted" (nearly dead), then use either a **Shock Trap** or **Pitfall Trap**. Once trapped, deploy at least one **Tranq Bomb** to knock it out, completing the capture.

Both capturing and killing Uth Duna offer viable paths, with the main difference being the item rewards you receive. While exact differences in drops are yet to be confirmed, here are the potential low-rank and high-rank items you can obtain:
