The Flash actor Ezra Miller is planning a return to the film industry after facing abuse and harassment allegations, alongside other controversies, starting in 2020.

Miller drew attention at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, as reported by Variety. Their appearance at the premiere of Die My Love, directed by We Need to Talk About Kevin filmmaker Lynne Ramsay, marked a significant public moment, hinting at a broader return to Hollywood.

Miller rose to prominence with roles in films like 2012’s The Perks of Being a Wallflower and gained further recognition as the Flash in multiple DC projects and as Credence Barebone in the Fantastic Beasts series. Public concern grew after footage surfaced appearing to show Miller choking a fan, sparking a series of troubling incidents in subsequent years.

In 2022, Miller faced legal issues in Hawaii, including arrests for disorderly conduct and harassment in March and second-degree assault shortly after. A felony burglary charge followed in Vermont in August 2022. Miller publicly apologized for their actions, citing “complex mental health challenges” and a commitment to returning to a “healthy, safe, and productive” state.

Miller’s most recent major role was in The Flash, which premiered in April 2023. Since then, they have kept a low profile, with notable appearances at Cannes and June’s Filming Italy Sardegna. In an interview with Italian outlet Lo Speciale Giornale at the latter, Miller discussed “tentative” plans to re-enter the film industry.

“I’ve been writing extensively, finding solace in solitude,” Miller shared.

A key part of their comeback includes a new film project co-written with Ramsay.

“I attended Cannes to support my dear friend Lynne Ramsay, one of the greatest living filmmakers,” Miller said. “We’re collaborating on a script together, which will likely be my first project back.”

Miller explained their Cannes appearance was at Ramsay’s request, emphasizing loyalty to close friends and colleagues. They admitted reluctance about the event, describing it as a “challenging reentry.”

“I carry deep regret for many of my actions and the events of that period, but I’m profoundly thankful for the lessons learned through that darkness,” Miller reflected.

“We often get caught up in perceptions—how we see ourselves and how others see us,” Miller continued. “I believe in moving beyond that to truly be there for others. Those who stood by me have my lifelong gratitude.”

They added: “I’ve also learned who doesn’t truly care about my well-being. In this industry, you encounter many who show little regard for you. I deeply regret much of what happened, but I’m grateful for the clarity gained.”

Ramsay revealed to the Los Angeles Times that their joint project is a vampire film featuring Miller as the lead. It remains unclear if Miller will pursue additional acting roles or other projects.

In April 2023, the Warner Bros. filmmaker praised Miller’s performance in the DC film, calling it “one of my best collaborations with an actor.” He also advocated against recasting Miller for any potential Flash sequel.
