Final Fantasy IX has launched a dedicated 25th anniversary website, announcing several upcoming projects. Discover more about the anniversary plans and potential future releases for this classic title.

Square Enix has unveiled a special website celebrating Final Fantasy IX's 25th anniversary. The site confirms the company is "preparing various anniversary projects including merchandise and collaborations."
Available offerings include character figures, plush toys, vinyl records, soundtracks, storybooks, and more. The developers have also promised additional announcements as the anniversary celebration progresses.
Originally released on July 7, 2000 for PlayStation, Final Fantasy IX has sold over 8.9 million copies globally. The game was later included in Square Enix's Final Fantasy 25th Anniversary Ultimate Box in December 2012. A remastered version arrived in February 2016 for iOS and Android devices, followed by a PC release later that year. PlayStation 4 owners received the game in September 2017, while Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Windows 10 versions launched in February 2019.

The anniversary website's launch has reignited speculation about a potential Final Fantasy IX remake. Following the successful Final Fantasy VII Remake series, many consider FFIX a strong candidate for similar treatment. In NHK's 2019 poll, Japanese voters ranked FFIX as the series' fourth-best installment. While the anniversary site makes no specific remake promises, the game's enduring popularity keeps hopes alive.
Another anticipated project is the previously announced FFIX anime series. Revealed in 2021 under the title "Final Fantasy IX: The Black Mages' Legacy," the story was set to follow Vivi's six children a decade after the original game's events. Since the initial announcement, no further updates have surfaced.
Paris-based Cyber Group Studios had secured distribution and merchandise rights, planning to produce the series internally. However, the company declared bankruptcy in October 2024 and entered judicial recovery. Multiple potential acquirers have shown interest in their intellectual properties, with United Smile and Newen Studios specifically expressing intentions to continue production on the FFIX animated series.
