Director Andy Muschietti attributes the box office failure of his DC Extended Universe film, The Flash, to a lack of widespread audience appeal. In an interview with Radio Tu, translated by Variety, Muschietti stated the film didn't sufficiently engage "the four quadrants" – a term referring to the four key demographic groups (males under 25, males over 25, females under 25, and females over 25) – to justify its $200 million budget. He specifically noted that many, particularly women, lacked familiarity or interest in the Flash character.

"The Flash underperformed, among other factors, because it didn't resonate with all four quadrants," Muschietti explained. "With a $200 million budget, Warner Bros. aims for broad appeal, hoping to attract even the most casual moviegoers." He added that his private conversations revealed a significant lack of interest in the Flash character among female audiences, hindering the film's success.

Muschietti acknowledged other contributing factors to the film's poor performance, including negative critical reception, controversy surrounding its CGI, its release within a dissolving film universe, and more.

Despite this setback, DC Studios has retained Muschietti to direct The Brave and the Bold, the inaugural Batman film within James Gunn and Peter Safran's revamped DC Universe.
