Jason Momoa’s portrayal of Lobo is set to make waves in the 2026 DC Universe film Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. The actor recently offered a brief but intriguing glimpse into what fans can anticipate from the character's cinematic debut.
Lobo, an intergalactic mercenary and bounty hunter, possesses superhuman strength and immortality. A native of the now-destroyed planet Czarnia, he shares a tragic parallel with Superman as the last of his kind. Originally created by writer Roger Slifer and artist Keith Giffen, Lobo made his first appearance in Omega Men #3 back in 1983.
Momoa, best known for playing Aquaman in the previous DC Extended Universe (DCEU), will now bring his own take on Lobo to the newly rebooted DC Universe (DCU). He has openly expressed that Lobo is his favorite comic book character, and this role marks a long-held dream come true—partly due to the visual resemblance between Momoa and the comic version of the character.
From Aquaman to Lobo, Jason Momoa is making a bold transition across DC universes.
In a recent interview with ScreenRant, Momoa shared some excitement—and nerves—about stepping into Lobo’s boots:
“Well, this is the role I've always wanted to play,” Momoa said. “That’s the comic I loved, so I'm really nervous about it. It’s kind of a no-brainer to play this character. It's pretty big. I don't want to give away too much, but I mean, we look pretty dead on, exactly like the character, and he’s pretty rough and gruff and… I'll say the bike’s really cool.”
When asked how much screen time Lobo would actually receive, Momoa remained modest:
“It’s her movie, so it's great. I just come in for a little bit.”
Earlier this year, DC co-chief James Gunn unveiled the first official image of Milly Alcock as Supergirl via Bluesky, confirming production had officially begun on Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Alcock, known for her breakout role in House of the Dragon, plays Kara Zor-El, the titular heroine.
Beyond that sneak peek, details remain scarce. However, it has been confirmed that the film draws heavy inspiration from the graphic novel Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King, Bilquis Evely, and Ana Nogueira. The story follows Ruthye Marye Knoll, an alien girl who seeks the aid of Supergirl to exact vengeance for the murder of her father at the hands of the villain Krem of the Yellow Hills.
Matthias Schoenaerts takes on the role of the antagonist Krem, while Eve Ridley portrays Ruthye, the young protagonist. Supporting the cast are David Krumholtz as Zor-El (Supergirl’s father), Emily Beecham as Alura (her mother), and of course, Jason Momoa as Lobo.
Scheduled for release in June 2026, Supergirl serves as the second installment in the new DCU following the summer 2025 debut of James Gunn’s Superman. Following that, the DCU’s Clayface movie is slated for September 2026, continuing the foundation of Gunn’s reimagined universe.
