I couldn't help but notice that Pokémon 151 booster bundles are back in stock on Amazon, which should be great news for collectors. However, with the price soaring to over $60—far above the MSRP of $26.94—it's hard to see this as anything but a head-scratcher. Amazon lists the bundle for as much as $82.50, with a "savings" of 16% bringing it down to $68.92. It's a stretch to call that a deal, but given how quickly this set vanishes from shelves, it's not something I can easily dismiss.
What draws me back to the Pokémon 151 set isn't just nostalgia; it's the quality. The card art here transcends the typical shiny-on-blank look. Take the Illustration Rare Bulbasaur, for instance. It's nestled among oversized jungle leaves, evoking scenes from a Ghibli film. Then there's Alakazam ex, seemingly deep in study for a psychic PhD amidst a cluttered room—charmingly unique.
The strength of this set lies in its seamless integration of art and gameplay. Blastoise ex, for example, not only boasts impressive abilities but also looks like it could hang in an art gallery. Even Charmander has been given a boost, now sporting 70 HP, which is just enough to survive minor attacks that would have taken out its less resilient counterparts. It's these subtle yet significant improvements that define the set's appeal.
Not every card is a standout. Zapdos ex, while decent, doesn't inspire deck-building or frame-worthy admiration. Yet, the overall quality remains high. Venusaur ex excels in both function and aesthetics, while Squirtle's artwork successfully places a cartoon turtle in a believable ecosystem. The attention to detail in these designs is truly commendable.
While I'm not thrilled about paying above MSRP, I can't deny the value packed into this set. If you're after packs that are fun to open and offer a chance at high-value pulls, the Pokémon 151 set remains a solid choice. Just be prepared to pay whatever premium Amazon decides to charge on any given day.
