Rambo fans, get ready for an exciting journey back in time! A prequel project titled "John Rambo" is in the works, directed by Jalmari Helander, known for his action-packed films "Sisu" and "Big Game." According to Deadline, Millennium Media, the powerhouse behind the Expendables and Has Fallen series, and previous Rambo films in 2008 and 2019, is launching this new venture at the Cannes market.
The Cannes market, coinciding with the Cannes Film Festival, is a pivotal event where film projects seeking funding or distribution partners are showcased to potential investors. While details on "John Rambo" remain scarce, we know it will delve into the Vietnam War era, serving as a prequel to the iconic 1982 film "First Blood." As of now, casting has not been finalized, and although Sylvester Stallone is aware of the project, he is not currently involved.
The screenplay for "John Rambo" has been crafted by Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani, known for their work on "The Mauritanian" and "Black Adam." Filming is scheduled to commence in Thailand starting October. Helander's recent success with the 2023 WWII action film "Sisu," which reimagined the John Wick formula with a Finnish commando battling Nazis, suggests he's well-equipped to bring the intensity and action expected from a Rambo prequel.
