Ryan Reynolds revealed he proposed an R-rated Star Wars project to Disney, though its future remains uncertain.
The Deadpool star discussed his non-Marvel endeavors on The Box Office Podcast. While he didn’t clarify whether Disney greenlit the idea or if it would be a film or series, Reynolds shared insights into his vision for the project.
“I pitched Disney an R-rated Star Wars concept,” Reynolds said. “It wouldn’t focus on major characters but a diverse cast. R-rated doesn’t mean crude—it’s a way to explore deeper emotions. I’m curious why studios hesitate to take risks like this.”
Reynolds has a strong track record in R-rated films, starring in three of the top-five highest-grossing R-rated movies ever: Deadpool, Deadpool 2, and Deadpool & Wolverine. The latter, a 2024 Marvel film featuring Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, holds the record as the highest-grossing R-rated movie, earning over $1.3 billion, according to Box Office Mojo.
“I wouldn’t star in it; that wouldn’t suit me,” Reynolds noted.
It’s uncertain whether an R-rated Star Wars project would replicate this success, but Reynolds is clearly intrigued by the idea. However, he emphasized he’d prefer a behind-the-scenes role.
“I wouldn’t star in it; that wouldn’t suit me,” Reynolds added. “I’d rather produce or write. IPs like Star Wars thrive on scarcity and surprise. While Disney+ reduces scarcity, there’s still room to captivate audiences.”
Reynolds remains active with Marvel projects. While he’s skeptical about Deadpool joining the Avengers, he’s reportedly been advocating for a Deadpool and X-Men crossover film.
As for Star Wars, an R-rated project may be years away. For more on Disney’s plans for the franchise, check out Star Wars: Starfighter, a film in development by frequent Reynolds collaborator Shawn Levy. Though details are sparse, Barbie’s Ryan Gosling is set to star.
