Must-Watch Anime Picks for Spring 2025

I highlighted The Apothecary Diaries, Once Upon A Witch’s Death, The Beginning After The End, To Be Hero X and WITCH WATCH in my overview of dubbed anime hitting Crunchyroll this spring, yet several other strong choices from the schedule deserve attention as well.

Devil May Cry marks Netflix's newest take on a video game in animated form, and judging by its trailer featuring Limp Bizkit vibes and a fresh Evanescence song, the team nailed the edgy appeal for its crowd. Netflix has delivered hits like Castlevania, Arcane and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners alongside misses such as Tekken: Bloodline and Dragon’s Dogma in this space. Fortunately, producer Adi Shankar brings experience from Castlevania, the quirky Guardians of Justice and Captain Laserhawk, paired with Studio Mir's work on Avatar: The Last Airbender, Korra and various cross-cultural animations. Even without prior knowledge of Devil May Cry, those who enjoy shows like Trigun will appreciate the high-stakes adventures of the iconic antihero Dante from the early 2000s.

In Moonrise, lunar forces push for freedom, a premise that might make fans of the 2021 film Moonfall wish for more in that vein. This original net animation boasts top-tier talent, with WIT Studio handling visuals as seen in Attack On Titan and Vinland Saga, character concepts from renowned artist Hiromu Arakawa of Fullmetal Alchemist fame, and oversight by director Masashi Koizuka from later seasons of Attack On Titan. Details on the plot remain sparse, even after a delayed rollout from last year, suggesting a standout experience ahead.

Finally, YAIBA may not ring bells for younger or international audiences, but it has held steady popularity since its manga debut in the late 1980s. Penned by acclaimed creator Gosho Aoyama, famous for Case Closed, this lighthearted samurai tale tracks Yaiba Kurogane in his clashes with a foe wielding a enchanted blade and demonic forces. Directed by WIT Studio, Yaiba: Samurai Legends is just the second screen version following a brief TV series in the 1990s, with Aoyama now deeply involved. Give it a try if you appreciate the investigative charm of Detective Conan blended with the playful combat of vintage Dragon Ball and nods to figures from Japan's past.
