Pokémon TCG Pocket's highly anticipated trading update has arrived, but instead of celebration, it's met with widespread player outrage. The trading system, criticized last week for its restrictions, has launched to an even more negative reception due to unexpectedly high resource requirements.

Social media is ablaze with frustrated players detailing the excessive demands. While the restrictions were previously announced, the sheer number of items needed for each trade was obfuscated behind the statement "items must be consumed in order to trade."

Unlike Wonder Pick or pack openings, every trade necessitates two distinct consumable items. First, players need Trade Stamina, replenishing over time or purchasable with Poké Gold (real money).

Secondly, and this is the main source of contention, Trade Tokens are required for trading any card of 3 Diamonds or higher rarity. The token costs are steep: 120 for a 3 Diamond card, 400 for a 1 Star card, and 500 for a 4 Diamond (ex Pokémon) card.

Trade Tokens are earned by discarding cards from one's collection. The exchange rates are unfavorable; for example, five ex Pokémon must be sold to acquire enough tokens to trade a single ex Pokémon. Selling a Crown card, the rarest in the game, yields enough tokens for only three ex Pokémon trades. Even selling a 3-Star immersive art card, a key selling point of the game, doesn't provide enough tokens for a high-value trade.

Overwhelming Negative Feedback

Reddit posts are flooded with scathing criticism. One post with over 1,000 upvotes calls the update "an insult" and expresses the player's intention to cease spending on the game. Comments describe the system as "hilariously toxic," a "monumental failure," and a betrayal of the community's desire for a more accessible trading experience. The 15-second delay for each token exchange adds insult to injury. Many players believe the system actively discourages trading.

Revenue Generation Concerns

Many suspect the trading system's design is primarily aimed at boosting revenue for Pokémon TCG Pocket, a game that reportedly generated $200 million in its first month before trading was implemented. The inability to trade cards above 2-Star rarity strongly suggests this is a deliberate strategy to incentivize pack purchases. One player reported spending approximately $1,500 to complete the first set.

The harsh token conversion rates are described as "predatory and downright greedy." The lack of alternative methods to acquire Trade Tokens exacerbates the problem. Players are forced to repeatedly purchase packs to accumulate enough tokens for trading.

Creatures Inc.'s Silence

Creatures Inc. remains silent on the backlash, a departure from their previous response to initial concerns. Their earlier statement, promising to incorporate player feedback, now rings hollow. IGN has reached out for comment, but a response is pending.

Some players suggest adding Trade Tokens as mission rewards could alleviate the issue. However, given the current reward structure focusing on Stamina-related items, this seems unlikely.

The launch of this poorly received trading mechanic casts a shadow on the upcoming Diamond and Pearl update, introducing Pokémon like Dialga and Palkia. The negative reception raises serious questions about the game's future.
