Ubisoft has established a new subsidiary centered around its flagship franchises Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six, backed by a €1.16 billion ($1.25 billion) investment from Chinese tech giant Tencent.

The announcement follows closely after the successful launch of Assassin's Creed Shadows, which surpassed 3 million players. Leading up to this release, Ubisoft faced significant challenges including high-profile failures, staff reductions, studio shutdowns, and cancelled projects, putting immense pressure on the company after its stock price reached record lows.

Valued at €4 billion ($4.3 billion) and headquartered in France, the new subsidiary will specialize in creating "sustainable, multi-platform gaming ecosystems." Tencent now holds a 25% ownership stake.

Ubisoft explained: "With expanded resources and enhanced creative capabilities, we'll elevate solo narrative experiences, increase multiplayer content updates, introduce free-to-play options, and incorporate more social connectivity."

The company will prioritize development of Ghost Recon and The Division series while expanding its most successful titles.

"This marks a pivotal moment in Ubisoft's evolution," stated Yves Guillemot, Ubisoft's co-founder and CEO.

"As we transform our operations, this strategic move allows us to be both flexible and visionary. We're dedicated to building enduring game ecosystems, strengthening top-performing franchises, and developing new intellectual properties using innovative technologies.

"Through this specialized subsidiary driving our three major franchises, with Tencent as minority investor, we're unlocking asset value, securing financial stability, and establishing optimal conditions for sustained growth. Its independent leadership will reinvent these brands as distinctive gaming ecosystems.

"We're building a more streamlined organization where exceptional teams will elevate our franchises, nurture emerging properties, and pioneer next-generation technologies—all to deliver extraordinary gaming experiences that surpass expectations and create lasting value."

Practically speaking, the subsidiary encompasses development teams across Montréal, Quebec, Sherbrooke, Saguenay, Barcelona, and Sofia working on Rainbow Six, Assassin's Creed, and Far Cry, along with Ubisoft's existing catalog and upcoming projects. Current initiatives appear unaffected, with no immediate workforce reductions announced.

The deal is projected to finalize before 2026.
