Hyper Light Breaker offers players a rich variety of gameplay options, including a diverse roster of characters, each known as a Breaker, who battle against the formidable Abyss King. These characters bring their unique playstyles to the forefront, enhancing the game's dynamic combat system.
Unlocking new characters in Hyper Light Breaker is straightforward, yet the game leaves players to discover the method on their own. This guide is designed to help you navigate through the process of unlocking new Breakers and to provide an overview of the characters available in the early access version of the game. As more characters become unlockable, we will keep this guide updated.
To unlock new characters, you'll need to collect Abyss Stones, which are exclusively dropped by defeating the Crowns, the game's bosses. Before you can face these bosses, you must first acquire Prisms, which serve as keys to the boss arenas. You can find Prisms by following the golden diamond icon on the map.
After defeating a Crown, return to the Cursed Outpost via the teleporter, and choose the Breaker you wish to unlock. Use your Abyss Stones to unlock the selected character, making them playable. While there are nine characters in total, only two are currently unlockable in the early access version. The unlocking method for future characters remains to be seen.
Each character in Hyper Light Breaker starts with a SyCom, a crucial item that defines their base stats and core perk, shaping their unique playstyle. These SyComs are the primary factor in choosing a character that aligns with your preferred combat strategy. Below is a detailed look at each character and their playstyles.
Vermillion, the first character players encounter, comes equipped with the Gunslinger SyCom, which offers a balanced stat package favoring ranged combat. A critical hit with his Rail shots ensures the next shot will also be a critical hit, enhancing his damage output.
For those who prefer melee combat, Vermillion can unlock the Tank SyCom, which boosts his armor upon perfect parries and offers better defensive and melee stats, making it a safer choice for close-quarters combat.
Lapis, like Vermillion, is initially geared towards ranged combat with her Lightweaver SyCom, which increases Rail shot damage after collecting a Battery. However, her Warrior SyCom sets her apart by boosting her core stats with each upgrade, making her increasingly powerful as the game progresses.
With either SyCom, Lapis is a formidable character, but her Warrior SyCom can make her a true powerhouse, outshining others in raw stats with sufficient upgrades.
Goro specializes in ranged combat, starting with the Astrologer SyCom that accelerates the charging of his Blade skills while shooting. His unlockable Sniper SyCom further increases his critical hit rate, making him a high-damage dealer.
As a ranged glass cannon, Goro's damage potential is significant, though his lack of a defensive SyCom may pose challenges. Mastering Goro's playstyle can lead to highly effective combat, rewarding bold and precise gameplay.
