DC Universe head James Gunn has officially confirmed that Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will now be titled simply Supergirl.
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Gunn detailed the reasoning behind this decision, mirroring a similar change for July’s Superman: Legacy, which is also being retitled to just Superman. He explained that his creative team conducts what they call a “premortem” before production begins. This process involves anticipating potential issues that could cause the film to underperform.
“I’m always cutting,” Gunn stated. “We do something called a premortem. You gather the team working on the project, usually a couple of months before shooting starts, and you ask hypothetically: ‘If this turns out to be an epic disaster, what are we doing today that will cause it?’ Everyone speaks freely.” He noted that these discussions often reveal concerns whispered about in other productions, such as casting mismatches or production designers running late.
Gunn shared that the original title, Superman: Legacy, was one of the elements brought up. “Even though I gave it that name, I wasn’t entirely sure,” he said. “First, I’m tired of the ‘superhero title, colon, subtitle’ format. Second, despite the movie dealing with legacy, the title felt like it was looking backward when we’re moving forward. Everyone agreed: ‘Yeah, change it.’”
