These five cards form a "cycle," each belonging to one of Magic's colors. They are all common-rarity creatures that are cost-effective and feature abilities linked to Tarkir's three-color clans. Additionally, they offer the ability to convert mana into a color associated with that clan.
Wizards of the Coast Senior Game Designer Adam Prosak explains, "Three-color limited environments need quite a bit of mana fixing at all rarities. We wanted to ensure many decks could access mana fixing, so we developed several designs focused on resolving mana issues. These creatures allow players to develop their board while simultaneously fixing their mana, unlike other designs like tapped lands, which only fix mana and can cause players to fall behind."

She elaborates, "We showcase the differences in the clans since their last appearance. The Jeskai's passionate, action-oriented monks, the Temur's use of Whisper magic, the Sultai's Nagas as jungle protectors and avengers, the Mardu's military prowess with supporting roles and varied dragon forms, and the Abzan clerics working to regrow lost kin trees."
Some recent Magic sets have faced criticism for relying too heavily on thematic gimmicks, even during revisits to previous planes. This makes *Dragonstorm* stand out with its straightforward approach to returning to Tarkir. Senior Worldbuilding Art Director Forrest Schehl acknowledges the importance of such feedback to Wizards of the Coast. He adds, "The top-level pitch for Tarkir was established well before *Murders at Karlov Manor* and subsequent sets, and it remained unchanged. We aimed to combine Dragons and Clans in a novel way, with Dragonstorms playing a significant role in our approach to this 'return-to'. Lauren and I felt the pressure to get it right from the start, ensuring we built the next chapter of this beloved plane with authenticity and substance."Tarkir: Dragonstorm is available for preorder now, with a scheduled release in both physical and digital formats on April 11. In-store prerelease events will commence on April 4. Continue reading for the full interview with Wizards of the Coast's Adam Prosak, Lauren Bond, and Forrest Schehl.
