The Wheel of Time has come to an abrupt halt on Prime Video following Amazon's decision to cancel the series after the conclusion of Season 3. According to Deadline, Prime Video opted not to renew the show for a fourth season after "lengthy deliberations." Despite the executives' appreciation for the series, financial constraints ultimately led to its cancellation.
The Wheel of Time is an adaptation of the beloved fantasy book series by Robert Jordan, featuring a cast led by Rosamund Pike. The initial two seasons faced criticism from fans due to significant deviations from the source material. However, Season 3 managed to win over the majority of the fanbase and was seen as a promising setup for future seasons.
The cancellation has left fans disappointed, especially given the vast amount of story left to explore from The Wheel of Time series. Many felt the show was just beginning to hit its stride. Unfortunately, the high production costs, shared by co-producers Sony Pictures TV and Amazon MGM Studios, proved too steep. Amazon MGM Studios also produces the costly The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, which may have influenced the decision.
As Deadline reported:
... the Season 3 overall performance was not strong enough compared to the show’s cost for Prime Video to commit to another season and the streamer could not make it work after examining different scenarios and following discussions with lead studio Sony TV, sources said.
IGN's review of The Wheel of Time Season 3 awarded it an 8/10, stating: "The Wheel of Time finally achieves its full potential in season 3, which is filled with rich characters finding their place in Robert Jordan’s complex fantasy world."
Although the TV adaptation has ended, fans can look forward to a 'AAA Open-World RPG' based on The Wheel of Time. IGN interviewed iwot Studios, the rights holders, to learn more about this upcoming game.
