If you're assembling a new gaming PC and searching for the top-tier gaming processor, your search ends here. The recently launched AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D AM5 desktop processor is currently back in stock on Amazon at its MSRP of $489. This CPU stands as the undisputed champion for gaming performance across both AMD and Intel's current lineups, presenting a smarter value proposition for gamers than the pricier Intel Core Ultra 9 285K.

AMD's X3D series processors are engineered specifically for gaming dominance. Leveraging AMD's 3D V-Cache technology, they deliver superior gaming benchmarks compared to even the highest-end standard Ryzen CPUs. While competent for multitasking and content creation, their core count makes them less ideal as primary workstations for those intensive tasks. Priced at $489, the 9800X3D undercuts the Intel Core Ultra 9 285K ($589) by $100 and the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X by $160, all while outperforming both in gaming. Unless you're a dedicated Intel enthusiast or committed to the older AM4 platform, the 9800X3D is the clear and compelling choice for your next gaming PC build.

The Other Two Zen 5 "X3D" Chips Are Unavailable

Following the debut of the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, AMD also launched its higher-tier Ryzen 9 Zen 5 "X3D" models: the 9950X3D ($699) and the 9900X3D ($599). Together, these three represent the pinnacle of gaming CPU performance today. Currently, the 9950X3D and 9900X3D are out of stock. For dedicated gamers, the 9800X3D remains the wisest investment, freeing up budget for other components. However, creators with deeper pockets who also game will appreciate the significant performance uplift offered by the new Ryzen 9 processors, thanks to their higher core counts and cache.

For creative professionals who also demand the ultimate gaming performance, the choice is simple: this is the CPU to get. The 9950X3D features a max boost clock of 5.7GHz, 16 cores, 32 threads, and a massive 144MB of combined L2 and L3 cache. In gaming, it's only marginally faster than the 9800X3D. For productivity and multi-threaded workloads, however, it easily outperforms the other X3D chips and any competing Intel offering.

The AMD Ryzen 9 9900X3D is the ideal processor for creative users who game but have a strict budget that rules out the 9950X3D. It offers a max boost clock of 5.5GHz, 12 cores, 24 threads, and 140MB of L2-L3 cache. While we haven't reviewed this specific chip yet, its specifications place its expected productivity and multi-core performance squarely between the 9950X3D and the 9800X3D. Gaming performance, however, is anticipated to be virtually identical to its siblings.
