Launched in September 2024, the Apple AirPods 4 are available in two versions: a standard model and a noise-canceling model. Key improvements over the AirPods 3 include the Apple H2 chip (replacing the H1), Bluetooth 5.3 (up from 5.0), enhanced IP54 dust and water resistance (compared to IPX4), a USB-C charging port (instead of Lightning), and an upgraded optical in-ear sensor.

AirPods 4 with ANC vs. AirPods Pro: Which Should You Choose?

The AirPods 4 with active noise cancellation closely resembles the pricier AirPods Pro 2, but with a key difference: the AirPods 4 utilize an open-ear design with fixed tips, unlike the in-ear, adjustable-tip AirPods Pro. Both ANC models offer Transparency Mode and Conversational Awareness.

Currently, the noise-canceling AirPods 4 are approximately $20 less expensive than the (also discounted) AirPods Pro 2. The decision hinges on your priorities: comfort versus performance. In-ear earbuds generally offer superior noise cancellation and audio quality due to passive isolation, but open-ear designs tend to be more comfortable for extended wear.
