In a significant development in the ongoing Epic vs Apple legal battle, Apple may now be compelled to eliminate its 30% commission on payments made through external links outside the App Store. This ruling marks another chapter in the saga that began when Epic Games' CEO, Tim Sweeney, enabled direct in-app purchases for Fortnite, bypassing Apple's payment system and offering players a discount.

Previously, Apple had to comply with similar regulations in the European Union, but the United States had been more favorable towards the tech giant. However, the latest ruling now prohibits Apple from imposing fees on external purchases, restricting developers' ability to place and format links, limiting the use of 'calls to action' like banners highlighting potential savings, excluding certain apps or developers, and using 'scare screens' to influence consumer choices. Apple is now required to use 'neutral messaging' to inform users when they are navigating to a third-party site.

While Epic Games has faced setbacks in some aspects of the case, this ruling essentially positions them as the victor in the broader conflict. Apple has announced plans to appeal the decision, but the likelihood of overturning the judges' rulings appears slim.

With the Epic Games Store now established on Android and iOS in the EU, and on Android in the US, the importance of the iOS App Store could diminish over time. This shift could herald a new era of app distribution and payment systems, benefiting both developers and consumers by fostering greater competition and choice.
