Apple is reportedly creating a new app focused on gaming experiences.

A recent Bloomberg report confirms earlier rumors suggesting the tech giant is working to position itself as a key player in the gaming industry. The report indicates further details will be shared at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference on June 9.

The company is expected to pre-install this app on all its new smart devices, including Apple TV, later this year. Similar to Steam on PCs, the app will serve as a hub for games, consolidating achievements, leaderboards, chat, and other features, replacing the current "Game Center." Bloomberg suggests a Mac version will also support games downloaded outside the App Store.

Apple has not commented on the speculation but recently acquired Sneaky Sasquatch developer RAC7 Games, fueling further discussion.

While Apple is not traditionally known for game development, its devices dominate the market. The iPhone is the leading platform for mobile gaming globally, with roughly two-thirds of its App Store revenue driven by premium games and in-app purchases. However, Bloomberg sources note that Mac computers still lag behind Windows PCs for high-end gaming, a perception the new app may not fully shift.

The gaming app is expected to launch alongside the next iOS update, likely in September.

Apple is currently navigating a legal dispute with Fortnite creator Epic Games, impacting not only the battle royale’s presence on iPhones but also Apple’s gaming revenue model. Last week, IGN reported that Fortnite’s return to iPhone and iPad propelled it to the top of the U.S. App Store charts, marking its comeback after a long absence.

Fortnite was removed from the iPhone App Store globally in 2020 after Epic Games introduced a payment system bypassing Apple’s standard 30% commission. After five years and over $1 billion in lost revenue, Fortnite has returned, retaining its alternative payment system.
