Avowed's Character Creation: A Deep Dive into Backgrounds
Avowed boasts a robust character creator, allowing players to customize their character's physical appearance and select a Background, shaping their backstory and initial narrative arc. This guide details each Background and its impact on gameplay.

Avowed offers five distinct Backgrounds: Arcane Scholar, Court Augur, Noble Scion, Vanguard Scout, and War Hero. While each provides unique dialogue options and a starting weapon (all common-quality, one-handed melee weapons), all equipment and abilities remain accessible regardless of choice. The key difference lies in the narrative context each Background provides.
Arcane Scholar: This academic background offers dialogue choices reflecting your character's education at Bragganhyl Academy. Your published treatise on soul lineages angered a local lord, leading to your arrest, but the Emperor recognized your potential and recruited you. Expect dialogue options rooted in occult knowledge, legal precedent, history, and poetry.
Court Augur: This background presents a tragic backstory, marked by visions that led to suspicion and exile after a village crop failure. The Emperor, recognizing your mystical abilities, appointed you as their personal mystic. Expect dialogue options reflecting spiritual insight and interaction with magic and the Gods. This background is ideal for players envisioning a wizard-like character, and they'll likely find common ground with the companion Giatta.
Noble Scion: A classic tale of fallen nobility, this background casts you as the offspring of influential but morally bankrupt nobles. Following your family's downfall, you sought the Emperor's mercy and became a valuable ally. This is perfect for players wanting to maintain loyalty to the Empire.
Vanguard Scout: Spared from execution, this background represents a humble individual with a preference for wilderness over city life and politics. Your tracking and espionage skills make you a valuable asset to the Empire. This background suits players preferring a hunter-style character, and they may find themselves connecting with the companion Marius.
War Hero: Your role in quelling a Skaenite uprising earned you a place among the Emperor's elite warriors. Loyalty and resilience define this background, making it suitable for players aiming for a warrior archetype. A strong connection with the companion Kai is likely.
Starting Weapons: A Fleeting Advantage

Each Background provides a common-quality, one-handed melee weapon:
These weapons, found near a shipwreck during the "On Strange Shores" quest, are quickly outclassed. Prioritize choosing the Background that best fits your desired roleplaying experience.
