The Next Chapter: Black Myth: Zhong Kui

A Last-Minute Reveal

Just as Gamescom's Opening Night Live (ONL) was about to conclude, attendees were treated to a surprise announcement: Black Myth: Zhong Kui, the successor to Black Myth: Wukong.

Black Myth: Wukong achieved both critical acclaim and commercial success, selling over 10 million copies in its first three days. VGInsights reports that the title has now generated $978 million in gross revenue from 20 million units sold.

Building on the triumph of their first release, developer Game Science deliberately selected the legendary Zhong Kui as the focus of their next project. The studio promises a unique and innovative gameplay experience, differentiating it from a straightforward sequel to Black Myth: Wukong.

Zhong Kui: The Divine Ghost Hunter

ONL host Geoff Keighley introduced Zhong Kui as "the deity who captures ghosts, roaming between the underworld and the mortal realm." The legend of Zhong Kui dates back to the 8th century, when Emperor Xuanzong fell gravely ill. According to the National Museum of Asian Art, the emperor was saved from a demon by "a dark, unsightly man" who identified himself as Zhong Kui, the spirit of a scholar wronged in ancient times, driven by loyalty to protect the throne.

Upon waking from the dream completely cured, the emperor ordered a court painter to create a portrait of Zhong Kui and distributed it across the empire as a protective talisman against evil. In these depictions, the mythical hero is often shown riding a donkey, accompanied by a retinue of conquered demons carrying his belongings.

Although Zhong Kui has been confirmed as the protagonist, Game Science clarified in an FAQ on their official website that the project is still in its early stages, describing it as "little more than an empty folder at this point." No gameplay footage or narrative details are available yet.

As for the timing of the announcement, Game Science pointed to their tradition of providing updates every August 20. Black Myth: Wukong was first revealed on August 20, 2020, and launched for PlayStation 5 and PC on August 20, 2024. The Xbox Series X|S version was released on August 20, 2025, alongside the unveiling of Black Myth: Zhong Kui.
