Borderlands 4 will introduce a photo mode in a post-launch update. Continue reading to discover more about the other features the developers are planning to add and to watch the game's official story trailer.
A photo mode is confirmed for Borderlands 4, but it will only be added after the game's initial release. In a June 25 post on X (formerly Twitter), Creative Director Graeme Timmins explained that while the feature was originally planned for launch, the team decided to prioritize other, more critical gameplay aspects.
In a follow-up comment, Timmins elaborated, "I had us focus on polishing other elements that are more central to the moment-to-moment experience. A photo mode was always part of the plan and was scheduled, but we needed more time on features that would directly impact the quality of life while playing."
Its predecessor, Borderlands 3, launched with photo mode in 2019, though the feature came to consoles at a later date. The developers have considered community feedback from the last game and have worked to incorporate those requests.
More recently, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford announced that the team has managed to include a highly requested feature at the last minute. In a June 20 post on X, Pitchford revealed that a combat radar will be available for players seeking additional assistance during gameplay.
This assistive tool provides better situational awareness, allowing players to detect enemies across the battlefield. However, the combat radar will be disabled by default and must be enabled in the game's settings.
Pitchford emphasized the importance of community feedback for the game's development, thanking "real fans who sincerely want the best for the game and provided constructive notes with reasonable arguments."
During the Borderlands Fan Fest on June 21, Gearbox and 2K Games debuted a new story trailer, highlighting the game's overall setting and narrative. The two-minute trailer provides an overview of the player's journey on the planet Kairos.
The story centers on The Timekeeper and his oppressive Order, which maintains a cruel reign over Kairos. As Vault Hunters, players must ignite a revolution to overthrow his regime. With the help of Claptrap and the Crimson Resistance, they must gather allies, collect resources, and do whatever it takes to liberate the planet's people.

Compared to Borderlands 3, the new game adopts a more serious tone, scaling back on comedic elements and presenting more grounded dialogue. It will be interesting to see how the developers transition from their signature "meme-style" humor, given that the story unfolds in a totalitarian world with weightier consequences.
Borderlands 4 is scheduled for release on September 12, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. For the latest updates and information on the game, explore our article below.
