Buffy the Vampire Slayer Reboot Reportedly In the Works With Sarah Michelle Gellar Returning

Hulu may be bringing Buffy back from the dead! Variety reports a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot is in the works, with Sarah Michelle Gellar potentially reprising her iconic role as Buffy, albeit as a recurring character. The series will focus on a new Slayer.

Adding star power behind the camera, Academy Award winner Chloé Zhao (known for Nomadland and Eternals) is in talks to direct and executive produce. Nora and Lila Zuckerman will serve as writers and showrunners. Notably, original creator Joss Whedon is not involved in this reboot.

Plot details remain scarce beyond the central focus on a new Slayer and the possibility of Gellar's return.

The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which ran for seven seasons (1997-2003), followed Buffy Summers, a high school student chosen to battle supernatural forces. She was aided by her friends Willow Rosenberg and Xander Harris, and her Watcher, Rupert Giles. The series' legacy continued through a spin-off, Angel, and canonical comic books.
