Van Gogh's iconic Sunflowers series, painted during his prolific Arles period, held deep personal significance for the artist. He viewed the sunflower as a symbol of gratitude and artistic inspiration, famously writing to a friend:
"If [Georges] Jeannin has the peony, [Ernest] Quost the hollyhock, I indeed, before others, have taken the sunflower."
He created four initial versions in August 1888, later revisiting the theme in January 1889 with additional renditions. The most renowned are the fourth version and its two repetitions.
The fourth version (F454) resides at London's National Gallery, one repetition (F457) at Tokyo's Sompo Museum of Art, and the most iconic repetition (F458), known for its vibrant colors, is housed at Amsterdam's Van Gogh Museum. This LEGO set, a collaboration between the Van Gogh Museum and LEGO, faithfully recreates F458 as a three-dimensional relief, using abstract techniques to mimic Van Gogh's distinctive brushstrokes.
The 2615-piece set includes 34 numbered bags and an instruction booklet with a QR code linking to a podcast about Van Gogh's life and artistic influences. The build process is thoughtfully structured: first, the frame, then the canvas, culminating in mounting the canvas within the frame using pins—a detail mirroring real-world art presentation.
A clever detail replicates an imperfection in the original F458: Van Gogh added a wooden strip to the top of the canvas. LEGO cleverly mimics this by having builders attach a separate strip, using brown bricks to simulate wood. This subtle detail, only noticeable to the builder, adds a layer of unique satisfaction.
The sunflower construction, while somewhat repetitive, accurately reflects Van Gogh's meticulous approach. The wilting flowers and those depicted in profile, initially appearing abstract, reveal their purpose upon stepping back from the completed piece.
The set's inherent practicality—its intended display location—is a key selling point. Once completed, it's ready to hang, providing lasting enjoyment. This is a high-quality LEGO set, offering a rewarding and aesthetically pleasing experience.
