Gamers are cautioning others to exercise caution regarding Nintendo's updated anti-piracy measures when purchasing a pre-owned Switch 2, as there's a chance of ending up with a console that's permanently restricted from online access.

As previously covered this month, Nintendo enthusiasts believe the company has started blocking all online features on Switch 2 consoles that have utilized the MIG Switch flash card—a tool for running unauthorized game copies.

This seemingly irreversible strategy results in the Switch 2 showing error code 2124-4508 whenever online services are accessed. Affected consoles can no longer download or play digital titles or Game-Key cartridges, receive system or game updates, engage in online multiplayer, use GameChat for communication, or access any Nintendo Switch Online features, such as the subscription's classic game libraries.

If you're in the market for a Switch 2, you probably expect to use these features. Unfortunately, one individual has already shared their experience of buying a discounted pre-owned Switch 2, only to discover it had been banned.

Reddit user Bimmytung posted about purchasing a used Switch 2 from Walmart, noting they inspected the box in the store to confirm everything appeared intact physically.

"Physically, it's in good shape, and all components seem present," Bimmytung explained. "I noticed the Mario Kart code had been scratched off, which made me suspect the original owner might have redeemed it before returning the system. They reduced the price by $50, so I decided to take a chance, thinking I'd at least get the hardware. I also picked up a Pro Controller 2 during the same trip.

"Once I got home and tried to complete the setup, I immediately encountered Error Code 2124-4508. A quick online search confirmed my worst fears. Thankfully, my local Walmart processed the return without any issues, but still... I have nothing but strong displease for the individual responsible for this."

Found one. Didn't end well.

As awareness grows about the risks associated with the MIG Switch card and Nintendo continues to ban more Switch 2 units, it becomes increasingly probable that additional affected consoles will surface on platforms like eBay or in secondhand stores.

Community members advise that anyone considering a used Switch 2 should request evidence that the device can still connect online and obtain confirmation that the prior owner never employed a MIG Switch, to avoid potential bans later on.

Earlier in May, before the Switch 2's release, Nintendo revised its Nintendo Account Agreement to state clearly that any efforts to employ "hardware or software that disrupts the Nintendo Account Services from operating as intended" could lead to "the Nintendo Account Services and/or the relevant Nintendo device becoming permanently partially or entirely unusable."

Nonetheless, news that Nintendo was rapidly imposing bans on users who had inserted a MIG Switch into their consoles surprised many Switch 2 owners, who saw their newly acquired devices locked out of online functions almost instantly.

IGN reached out to Nintendo previously for more information about these bans but did not get a reply. IGN has also inquired recently about what steps affected consumers should take if they buy a blocked pre-owned Switch 2, whether Nintendo will address the situation and lift bans, and if the console manufacturer will provide advice to retailers dealing with used inventory to alert them to this issue.
