Chris Evans Says He Isn't Returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe for Another Avengers

Chris Evans Denies Return to Marvel Cinematic Universe Despite Reports

Despite recent reports, Chris Evans has definitively stated he will not be reprising his role as Captain America in Avengers: Doomsday or any other Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film. Evans directly refuted a Deadline report claiming his return alongside Robert Downey Jr., calling it "not true" in an interview with Esquire.

This contradicts information shared by Anthony Mackie, the current Captain America, who initially stated his manager informed him of Evans' return. However, Mackie subsequently spoke with Evans, who confirmed his retirement from the MCU remains firm. Evans reiterated his retirement to Esquire, stating he's "happily retired" and has grown accustomed to these recurring rumors since Avengers: Endgame.

While Evans has returned to the superhero genre, his appearance as Johnny Storm in Deadpool & Wolverine was a smaller, comedic role, significantly different from his leading role as Captain America.

The MCU's future is currently somewhat uncertain following the removal of Jonathan Majors, who played Kang, from the franchise after his conviction for assault and harassment. Majors' planned role as the MCU's next Thanos has been scrapped, leading to speculation and reshuffling of plans.

Robert Downey Jr. is now confirmed to play Doctor Doom as the new main antagonist. This news, along with other unconfirmed rumors, fueled speculation about other original Avengers returning. While Benedict Cumberbatch confirmed Doctor Strange's absence from Avengers: Doomsday, he will have a "central role" in its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars. The Russo Brothers are directing Avengers: Doomsday, which is expected to continue the multiverse storyline, potentially featuring Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter.
