Codemasters has officially announced the discontinuation of expansion packs for EA Sports WRC 2023, signaling the end of development for the racing title. In a further blow to rally fans, the studio revealed plans to halt future rally game projects.

The UK-based racing game pioneer made the announcement through EA's official website.

"Our WRC collaboration represented a milestone in Codemasters' off-road racing legacy, building on classics like Colin McRae Rally and Dirt," the studio stated. "For decades, we've created a haven for rally enthusiasts, constantly innovating to capture the adrenaline rush of pushing vehicles to their limits. We've assembled exceptional development talent, collaborated with racing legends, and shared our passion for rally culture."

The World Rally Championship organization commented on the development via social media, offering an ambiguous response about the "WRC gaming series embarking on an exciting new path with announcements expected shortly."

EA's decision to cease Codemasters' rally game production delivers disappointing news for motorsport fans, particularly following the company's high-profile acquisition of the legendary British developer in 2020.

This announcement follows recent reports of extensive job cuts at EA affecting over 300 staff, including approximately 100 positions at Respawn Entertainment.

Codemasters has dominated rally gaming for nearly thirty years, beginning with 1998's groundbreaking Colin McRae Rally. This seminal title launched a prestigious racing franchise that evolved after McRae's tragic 2007 passing, rebranding as the Dirt series. The transitional Dirt 2 (2009) gave way to Dirt Rally's hardcore simulation approach in 2015.

EA Sports WRC (2023) marked Codemasters' first officially licensed WRC game since Colin McRae Rally 3 in 2002. IGN's review praised how it integrated the exceptional physics of Dirt Rally 2.0 into an authentic championship experience, though technical issues initially hampered its potential. Post-launch updates targeted its visual performance problems.
