If you're a fan of the Persona series and the upcoming Metaphor: ReFantazio, you'll be thrilled to know that the composer behind these iconic games, Shoji Meguro, is leading a new project called Guns Undarkness. This exciting new turn-based JRPG is set to launch a free demo during the upcoming Steam Next Fest, offering gamers a sneak peek into what promises to be an enthralling experience.

Mark your calendars for February 24, 2025, as Guns Undarkness will be releasing its demo during Steam Next Fest. Shoji Meguro, known for his work on the Shin Megami Tensei and Persona series since joining Atlus in 1995, has ventured into indie game development while still collaborating with Atlus. His latest endeavor, Guns Undarkness, is a sci-fi stealth action JRPG that will be published under Kodansha Game Creators Lab.
The game was initially unveiled at Indie Live Expo Winter 2021 and successfully met its Kickstarter goals in 2022. Alongside Meguro, the project features the talents of Ghost in the Shell character artist Ilya Kuvshino and rapper Lotus Juice, renowned for his contributions to Persona 3. Following the demo, Guns Undarkness will enter early access later this year, paving the way for its full release in Spring 2025.

According to its Steam page, Guns Undarkness draws inspiration from classics like Metal Gear Solid and the Persona series. Set in the year 2045, the game places you in the shoes of a member of a private military company. Your mission is to uncover the secrets of a world teetering on the edge of destruction and ultimately save humanity.
The gameplay is split into two distinct modes: stealth and battle. During stealth phases, players must navigate the environment undetected, gaining strategic advantages in combat when they engage enemies. Battles are turn-based, requiring careful planning and the use of various firearms to secure victory.
The demo for Guns Undarkness will offer around 20 minutes of gameplay, including a tutorial that covers basic controls, the battle system, weapon handling, and strategies for the game's early stages. Once released for early access in Spring 2025, players can expect about 10 hours of gameplay on PC. While no specific release date has been announced, anticipation is high for this innovative JRPG.
