Get ready, Guardian — Bungie has just announced an exciting lineup of content for its sci-fi shooter, Destiny 2, under the banner of the "Year of Prophecy." This year promises to be packed with two new expansions and significant seasonal and core game updates, available to both paying and free players.
The "Year of Prophecy" will feature four "major content beats," comprising two paid expansions and two free major updates. The first of these, Rite of the Nine, is a fresh take on dungeon diving, already accessible to all players at no extra cost. This update brings unique twists to familiar dungeons like Prophecy, Spire of the Watcher, and Ghosts of the Deep, allowing players to reconnect with Orin and discover refreshed dungeon weapons.
On July 15, Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate, the first paid expansion of the year, will launch. This expansion introduces a multiyear saga involving the enigmatic Nine, predating even the Traveler. It features new characters, Lodi and Ikora, and takes place on the new destination, Kepler. Kepler is inspired by the puzzle-solving and pathfinding challenges of Destiny 2's dungeons, offering deep exploration, mystery, and player-driven discovery. Expect new enemies, weapons, gear, and destination-specific abilities.
Simultaneously on July 15, major core game innovations will be introduced, including revised armor and gear systems for enhanced buildcrafting and a new activity selection screen called the Portal. This screen allows players to easily choose between various ops like Fireteam Ops, Pinnacle Ops, Crucible Ops, and the new Solo Ops. These updates will cater to different play styles, from quick fireteam action to solo gameplay, with 50 new modifiers for deeper customization and curated activity rotations for fresh challenges.

On September 9, the Ash & Iron major update will go live, followed by the second expansion, Renegades, on December 2. The year will conclude with the Shadow & Order major update on March 3.
Destiny 2: Renegades draws inspiration from the "legendary Star Wars universe," merging Destiny’s storytelling and gameplay with iconic sci-fi elements.
These announcements come after Bungie laid off 220 staff members in July 2024, following another 100 layoffs less than a year prior. Despite these challenges, the game continues to evolve and excite its player base.
While Destiny 2 keeps Bungie busy, the studio is also working on Marathon, a reboot of the classic Bungie franchise revealed in May 2023. In a recent IGN's Marathon hands-on preview, it was noted that the alpha version of Marathon shows promise in satisfying the Bungie PvP itch, with hopes high for its release on PC and consoles in September.
