A new Street Fighter movie has chosen its director, and it's none other than Kitao Sakurai, known for his work on the outlandish comedy series The Eric Andre Show. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sakurai will helm the upcoming film adaptation for Legendary Entertainment, with Capcom deeply involved in the project. The movie is slated for release on March 20, 2026.
This marks another attempt to bring the iconic fighting game to the big screen, following the memorable 1994 film that featured Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile, Ming-Na Wen as Chun-Li, and the late Raul Julia as M. Bison—a film that, despite its critical reception at the time, has since gained a cult following.
While casting details remain under wraps, fans can likely anticipate seeing beloved Street Fighter characters brought to life once more. Initially, the project was set to be directed by Danny and Michael Philippou, known for Talk to Me, but they left the project last summer. Sakurai's involvement suggests a shift towards a more absurdist tone, which could be a fresh and exciting approach for the franchise, especially for fans who appreciate the game's more cartoonish aspects.
In the meantime, enthusiasts can dive into the latest installment, Street Fighter 6, which recently introduced Mai Shiranui as its newest fighter. For more on the game, check out our comprehensive Street Fighter 6 review.
