Excitement is building among Nintendo fans following the discovery of new Nintendo filings that hint at the possibility of a new GameCube controller designed for use with the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. As reported by Nintendo Life, a recent FCC filing for a "game controller" aligns with the Switch 2, suggesting it could be a wireless Bluetooth device. The internet, particularly users on Famiboards, have delved into the filing and noted that one of the images shows a label location that closely matches the back of a GameCube controller, positioned behind the C-Stick.

While some speculate that this could be a new Switch 2 Pro Controller, the prevailing theory suggests it's intended for use with Nintendo's Switch Online subscription service. This service already offers wireless classic controllers for retro gaming, which fuels speculation about the potential inclusion of GameCube games in the library. Nintendo fans have long desired GameCube classics on the Switch, and with Nintendo's current offerings limited to NES, SNES, N64, Sega Genesis, and Game Boy games on its subscription service, the addition of GameCube titles could mark a significant expansion.

Nintendo Consoles

The Nintendo Switch 2 was unveiled earlier in January with a trailer that confirmed backwards compatibility features and the addition of a second USB-C port. However, many details, such as other games and the function of the mysterious new Joy-Con button, remain undisclosed. The Joy-Con mouse theory has gained some traction among fans.

Last month, a Nintendo patent suggested that the Switch 2’s Joy-Con controllers could be attached upside down. The new console is expected to use gyro mechanics similar to those in smartphones without screen lock. Unlike the original Nintendo Switch, which used rails for Joy-Con attachment, the Switch 2's controllers will use magnets, allowing them to be attached on either side. This design change could offer players more flexibility in button placement and headphone port positioning, potentially leading to innovative gameplay mechanics.

Analysts predict that the Switch 2 will be priced at around $400, though some believe it could reach up to $500. June has been floated as a possible release month. While much remains unknown about the Switch 2, Nintendo has scheduled a Direct for April 2 to reveal more about the console.

In the meantime, fans can enjoy a taste of GameCube nostalgia with Metroid Prime Remastered on the current Nintendo Switch.
