The Google Streamer 4K, released in September 2024, is a significant upgrade from its predecessor, the Chromecast 4K. Google boasts that the new processor is up to 22% faster, with twice the memory at 2GB and four times the storage at 32GB. It supports both high-speed 802.11ac WiFi and gigabit ethernet connectivity. The device now uses a USB Type-C port for power, making it easier to replace the power brick if needed. Additionally, if you lose the newly redesigned remote, there's a convenient remote-finder button directly on the main unit.

Like other premium models, the Google Streamer 4K streams at up to 4K resolution with HDR support, including Dolby Vision, HDR10, and HDR10+ formats. Although it features an HDMI 2.1 port, it's capped at 4K @ 60fps. It also supports Dolby Atmos for an immersive audio experience when paired with compatible speakers like the Sonos Arc. The device doubles as a smart home controller, functioning as both a Thread border router and a Matter hub.

Compared to the Apple TV and Roku Ultra, the Google Streamer 4K offers similar functionality at a more affordable price. While the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max is cheaper, the Android TV interface on the Google Streamer is cleaner and more intuitive, without the intrusive Amazon ads. The Nvidia Shield TV Pro is the only superior option in terms of streaming capabilities, but it's priced at $200. With added smart home features and Matter and Thread compatibility, the Google Streamer 4K delivers an outstanding value package.
