Rockstar Games has announced a substantial delay for Grand Theft Auto VI, pushing its release to May 26, 2026 from the originally planned fall 2025 window.
The developers expressed regret in an official statement: "We sincerely apologize for this extended delay to what we anticipate will be the largest entertainment launch in history. The overwhelming enthusiasm for a new Grand Theft Auto has been incredibly humbling for our entire team. We appreciate your continued support and patience as we work to perfect the game.
"Throughout our history, we've always strived to surpass player expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI represents our most ambitious effort yet. This additional development time will allow us to deliver the quality experience our fans deserve.
"We look forward to sharing more updates in the near future."
The announcement confirms a concrete release date but provides no new gameplay footage or confirmation about platform availability. This lack of specifics regarding launch platforms has sparked speculation about potential simultaneous PC release alongside PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions.
Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick, commenting on the delay in an investors note, stated: "We fully support Rockstar's decision to extend development for Grand Theft Auto VI to ensure it meets their exacting creative standards. This groundbreaking title is poised to redefine entertainment experiences."
The delay creates significant shifts in the 2025-2026 gaming calendar. Major titles including Borderlands 4, the next Battlefield installment, Marathon, and Ghost of Yotei now face reduced competition in late 2025. Nintendo's forthcoming Switch 2 launch may also benefit from this scheduling change.
However, the new May 2026 release window may force other developers to reconsider planned launches around that timeframe, as GTA VI's market impact will likely overshadow competing titles.
