The tech-heavy CES 2025 event turned out to be a surprising hub for movie and TV show announcements from Sony, with one of the standout reveals being the confirmation of a *Helldivers 2* film currently in development. The movie will be a joint effort between Sony Productions and Sony Pictures, though no further plot details or release timelines have been shared.
During a live session at CES, Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions, officially confirmed the project, stating: “Looking ahead as to what might come next, I'm excited to announce we are working with Sony Pictures on developing a film adaptation of our amazingly popular PlayStation game *Helldivers 2*.”
*Helldivers 2*, developed by Arrowhead Game Studios, has become a global phenomenon thanks to its intense co-op gameplay and satirical tone heavily influenced by the cult sci-fi classic *Starship Troopers*. In the game, players take on the role of elite soldiers defending the authoritarian Super Earth regime against relentless waves of alien threats—Automatons and Terminids—all while spreading the propaganda-driven ideology of "Managed Democracy."
While fans are naturally brimming with questions about the upcoming film, neither Sony nor Arrowhead is ready to offer concrete answers just yet. However, Johan Pilestedt, Chief Creative Officer at Arrowhead, did address concerns about the studio's involvement in the production. When asked whether Arrowhead would ensure the movie stays true to the spirit of the game, Pilestedt admitted he had been avoiding the question but confirmed that the team will have *some* level of input.
“I've been dodging this question,” Pilestedt said. “The short answer is yes. The long answer is that we'll see. We are not Hollywood people, and we don't know what it takes to make a movie. And therefore we don't, and shouldn't, have final say.”
Given how closely *Helldivers 2* mirrors the themes and visuals of *Starship Troopers*, it’s an intriguing choice for a film adaptation. It remains to be seen how Sony will differentiate the cinematic version and who they’ll bring on board to lead the creative direction. For now, the project appears to be in its very early stages, so more information may not surface for some time.
In the meantime, *Helldivers 2* continues to break records as the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios title ever, having sold over 12 million copies within just 12 weeks of launch. The game has also experienced a major resurgence following the release of the much-anticipated Illuminate update, which introduces a brand-new faction for players to battle against.
Sony's commitment to expanding its gaming IP into film and television was further emphasized during the CES 2025 presentation, where two additional adaptations were revealed:
This follows the continued success of *The Last of Us*, with Season 2 of the acclaimed HBO series set to premiere in April 2025. Clearly, Sony sees great potential in bringing its flagship games to life beyond the screen, and *Helldivers 2* is now officially part of that growing universe.
