Nintendo has given us our first detailed look at a game cartridge for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, set to launch next month. The latest video released via the Nintendo Today app showcases the official Switch 2 carry case, which features slots designed to hold up to six cartridges from both the original Nintendo Switch and the new Switch 2.
As previously confirmed, Switch 2 cartridges maintain the same size and shape as their predecessors, allowing the new console to use a single slot for games from both generations. However, there's a notable change: the color of the cartridges. Switch 2 cartridges are distinctively red, a consistent choice across all games, as evidenced by the Mario Kart World cartridge featured in the video. If you don't have the Nintendo Today app, you can view the video shared by OatmealDome on X/Twitter.
The top of the cartridge also sports a printed design sticker with the Switch 2 logo, differentiating it from the original Switch cartridges. The official Switch 2 carrying case is designed to accommodate the console with the new Joy-Con 2 attached, six cartridges, and two Joy-Con 2 straps.
Despite these changes, Switch 2 cartridges remain identical to the original in all other aspects, including the unpalatable coating applied by Nintendo to deter users from putting them in their mouths. "We don't want anybody to be at risk of any unwanted consumption," said Takuhiro Dohta, the director of Switch 2, in a previous interview with GameSpot. "We have indeed made it so that if it enters your mouth, you'll spit it out."
