Hollow Knight: Silksong Dev Fuels Nintendo Switch 2 Direct Fever With a Picture of a Chocolate Cake

Six years have passed since Team Cherry announced Hollow Knight: Silksong, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2017 Metroidvania masterpiece, Hollow Knight. Throughout this time, Silksong's appearances at various events have been sporadic and unpredictable, even leading to a seeming confirmation from Microsoft of a pre-June 2023 release (which didn't happen). The Game Awards came and went without a Silksong reveal. Could the recently announced Nintendo Switch 2 Direct finally be the platform for its unveiling?

The Hollow Knight fanbase believes so, and it all centers around a picture of a cake.

Sharp-eyed fans on the Hollow Knight subreddit noticed that on January 15th, Team Cherry co-director William Pellen updated his Twitter/X profile picture to a chocolate cake. He accompanied this with the tweet: "something big is coming. keep your eyes closed tomorrow."

With rumors circulating about a January 16th Nintendo Switch 2 reveal, the timing was highly suggestive. Nintendo indeed announced the Switch 2 that day, although many questions remain about the console. Did Pellen subtly hint at the Switch 2 reveal? And if so, why?

This is where the Hollow Knight community's speculation intensified. Fans reverse-image-searched the cake, tracing it back to a Brooklyn Blackout Cake recipe on Bon Appétit. The recipe's publication date? April 2, 2024.

The significance? Nintendo confirmed a Nintendo Direct: Nintendo Switch 2 for Wednesday, April 2, 2025. Fans believe Pellen initiated an alternate reality game (ARG) with the cake tweet, connecting it to the Direct date.

The speculation doesn't end there. Fans are dissecting Pellen's new X/Twitter handle, @everydruidwaswr, and his new name, "little bomey." One compelling theory suggests the handle's 15-character length (matching Twitter's character limit) and the potential significance of "wr" (possibly part of a larger word) in relation to a Silksong NPC, the Druid of the Moss Temple. The "little bomey" name is linked to a Southern Australian wine, aligning with Team Cherry's location, but the slightly altered spelling adds to the mystery.

It's crucial to remember that Hollow Knight: Silksong's initial announcement listed Windows, Mac, Linux, and Nintendo Switch as launch platforms. However, that was six years ago. Has Nintendo secured Silksong as a Switch 2 launch title? Is it a timed exclusive? Or is this all just fervent speculation from an eager fanbase?

We'll have answers in a few months. Until then, let's explore the other announcements from Nintendo's Switch 2 reveal.
