Disney movie veteran Jon Favreau is collaborating with Disney on a new Disney+ series featuring the classic animated icon, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. According to a Deadline report, Favreau will blend his expertise in live-action and animation to bring Oswald to life on the streaming platform. He will serve as both writer and producer for the series, though further details such as plot and casting information remain under wraps.

Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, an important character in Disney's expansive lineup, had a brief stint with the company. Originally created by Walt Disney, Oswald appeared in 26 silent cartoons from 1927 to 1928 before a rights dispute led Universal to take control. This period, as detailed in our in-depth look at Disney’s 100-year history, was challenging for Disney but ultimately paved the way for the creation of Mickey Mouse. Disney regained the rights to Oswald in 2006, and in 2022, they released its first new original short starring the character in 95 years. Now, with Favreau's project, Disney aims to showcase Oswald as more than just a symbol of its historical journey. Although a release date has not been announced, fans can anticipate this live-action and animation hybrid in the future.

While Favreau is focusing on one of Disney's oldest animated properties, he has also been deeply involved with its newer universes. Star Wars enthusiasts will recognize him for his contributions to projects like The Mandalorian, Skeleton Crew, and Ahsoka, pushing the galaxy far, far away into the future. Additionally, Favreau has left his mark on the Marvel Cinematic Universe over the last 15 years, both behind and in front of the camera, and directed the 2019 remake of The Lion King. Fans can look forward to seeing him direct again with The Mandalorian and Grogu, set to hit theaters in 2026.

As Oswald the Lucky Rabbit prepares for an official return under the Disney umbrella, it's worth noting that the character's most recent film appearance was just a year ago. In 2023, following Oswald's entry into the public domain, Oswald: Down the Rabbit Hole was announced—a horror movie featuring the classic character and starring Ghostbusters actor Ernie Hudson.
