In Avowed's opening moments, the Envoy is tragically assassinated. Solving this murder mystery reveals Ygwulf as the killer. The choice: mercy or vengeance. This guide explores whether you should kill Ygwulf.
Ygwulf's Plea for Mercy
After investigating with Kai and Marius in Paradis, you'll uncover Ygwulf, a Paradisan Rebel resisting Aedyr's influence. As the Emperor's Envoy, you're a prime target. You'll confront Ygwulf in his underground hideout after navigating enemies and obstacles. Documents within the dungeon (or Ygwulf himself) reveal his remorse; his actions stemmed from misguided divine visions. He's apologetic but prepared to face justice.
The Consequences of Mercy or Surrender
Surrendering Ygwulf to Inquisitor Lödwyn is the least favorable outcome, resulting in a brutal, implied death. This yields fewer rewards than sparing him or killing him. Sparing Ygwulf grants 625 Copper Skeyt and some Adra, but his death is inevitable later in the game.
Why Killing Ygwulf is the Best Option
Given his eventual demise, choosing to attack Ygwulf in dialogue offers the best outcome. The ensuing boss fight provides valuable combat practice. More importantly, defeating him yields superior loot: currency, Adra, and the unique Blackwing armor. This armor significantly boosts stealth damage (+30%) and increases crouching movement speed (+25%).
Ygwulf's Lasting Impact (Spoiler Warning)
Despite being an early-game encounter, Ygwulf's fate subtly impacts Avowed's ending. Regardless of your efforts to bring peace to the Living Lands, his death radicalizes the Paradisan Rebellion, ensuring their continued violent resistance even after the credits roll. This is showcased in post-game art and narration.
