The game frequently warns against engaging Lu Bu, but for those seeking the challenge (and the rewards), here's how to defeat this formidable foe.

Should You Fight Lu Bu?

Battling Lu Bu is incredibly difficult; it might take over an hour. However, there are compelling reasons to face him:

• Bragging Rights: Defeating Lu Bu is a significant achievement.
• Narrative Necessity: In the Shu or Wei campaigns (Chapter 4, Battle of Xiapi), confronting Lu Bu is unavoidable.
• Rewards: Victory at Hulao Gate earns you the "The Strongest" trophy. Post-game victory unlocks the game's ultimate weapon, the halberd.

Phase 1: Mounted Lu Bu

Preparation is key. Equip a multi-hit sword to stagger him, and Battle Arts with low Bravery requirements, quick activation, and wide range (e.g., Falcon Flurry, Mad Blade Rush, Absconding Slash, Flying Dragon Slash). Use accessories boosting health and defense (Divine Bird’s Wing, Divine Turtle’s Shell). A weapon granting Bravery on Perfect Evades is crucial.

Initially, Lu Bu charges on Red Hare. His attacks have limited area of effect, making evasion relatively easy. Exploit his brief pauses to unleash Battle Arts, then retreat. Once his health reaches 80%, he dismounts.

Phase 2: Unmounted Lu Bu

On foot, Lu Bu is even more aggressive. His attacks are rapid, and he frequently dashes across the battlefield with a red aura, becoming temporarily unstaggerable. Evade his charges (sets of three). He may attempt a grab attack (without his spear); evade this as well.

His most dangerous move involves an orange glow, followed by three devastating ranged arrow attacks. Use a long-range Battle Art like Absconding Slash to counter this; close-range attacks are fatal. Keep your Musou gauge full for invincibility in emergencies. Lu Bu is surprisingly juggleable in this phase; maintain close proximity to react to his attacks and rapidly charge your Battle Arts.

Phase 3: Musou Rage

Upon reaching a certain health threshold, Lu Bu enters Musou Rage. He becomes unstaggerable and unleashes relentless attacks. The objective is to deplete his Fortitude before he can use his Musou attack; otherwise, the phase restarts. Utilize all remaining resources: Musou attacks, Battle Arts, and rapid, powerful strikes.
