Tidepool Games has just launched a thrilling new game for Android enthusiasts called MageTrain. If you've ever enjoyed the gameplay of Nimble Quest, you'll find MageTrain's mechanics strikingly familiar, as it draws significant inspiration from it.
MageTrain blends elements of Snake, auto-battlers, and roguelikes into a fast-paced pixel art adventure. In this game, you guide a line of heroes that follow you like a snake, each autonomously attacking as you navigate the arena. Your role involves strategically managing the position of each hero within the line, as their abilities shift based on their placement. Whether they lead or follow impacts their effectiveness in battle.
At launch, MageTrain offers nine unique heroes, including one that throws birds. Each hero brings distinct skills to the table, varying by their position in the train. You'll journey through eight diverse dungeons, battle against 28 different enemy types, and unlock 30 skills to enhance your team's capabilities. As you progress, you'll gather gold and power-ups to bolster your heroes.
The roguelike nature of MageTrain ensures that no two runs are the same. You'll navigate branching paths, choose upgrades, and strive to survive as long as possible. This structure is reminiscent of games like Slay the Spire or FTL, where there are no fixed levels and you can't save your progress mid-run. One wrong move—whether it's crashing into an obstacle or being overwhelmed by enemies—and you'll need to start over.
The excitement of MageTrain lies in the continuous improvement you experience with each run. Even when you don't succeed, you gain insights into when to adopt a defensive strategy, when to go all-out on offense, and when to simply hold on for another 30 seconds.
MageTrain is now available on Android and is free to play. You can download it from the Google Play Store and dive into the action right away.
