NetEase Games Issues Warning: Marvel Rivals Modders Face Potential Bans
NetEase Games, developer and publisher of the popular team shooter Marvel Rivals, has issued a stern warning to players utilizing modifications (mods). The company explicitly stated that any form of modding, from cosmetic alterations to performance-enhancing add-ons, violates the game's terms of service and risks permanent account bans.
This warning follows the launch of Season 1, which introduced new content including the Fantastic Four's Invisible Woman and Mister Fantastic (with Human Torch and The Thing slated for future updates). While Season 1 incorporated measures to detect and deter modding by checking asset hashes, resourceful players quickly discovered workarounds.
Reports surfaced of mods, such as one allowing players to transform Mister Fantastic into One Piece's Luffy, circulating online despite NetEase's efforts. One mod, created by user Prafit and available on Nexus Mods, bypassed the game's anti-modding mechanisms. While Prafit warned users of potential account bans, the mod garnered over 500 downloads. Other mods, including one featuring US President-elect Donald Trump, have been removed from Nexus Mods.
Although NetEase Games hasn't publicly confirmed any bans for modding yet, the company maintains its zero-tolerance policy towards modifications, cheats, and hacks. The long-term consequences of this ongoing situation remain to be seen, particularly given Marvel Rivals' recent nomination for Online Game of the Year at the DICE Awards 2025. The situation underscores the ongoing tension between players' desire for customization and developers' need to maintain game integrity.
