Few names stir nostalgia in the British gaming community like Moshi Monsters. At its peak, these peculiar yet charming creatures were everywhere—on TV commercials, in magazines, and of course, on computer screens. Now, the original developer, Mind Candy, is leading a charge to bring them back.
The studio's newly launched Kickstarter campaign aims to usher the hit Flash-based MMORPG into a new era, with a special focus on mobile. According to the pitch, players will return to a devastated Monstro City, destroyed by a mysterious asteroid, and work to rebuild their home.
You'll take on the role of one of the six original Moshi Monsters, adopting and raising your own virtual pet just like in the original game. Along the way, you'll dive into a fresh, story-driven adventure filled with minigames and callbacks to the classic MMORPG, all while reconstructing the iconic Monstro City.
Monstrous!I've often said that mobile gaming owes a huge debt to Flash. Sites like Newgrounds, Miniclip, and Armor Games made gaming accessible to a younger generation, and many genres and mechanics pioneered in Flash have since become mobile staples.
That said, Moshi Monsters will serve as a real test of whether nostalgia alone can revive a long-dormant title, no matter how iconic. If you're interested in helping Mind Candy bring Moshi Monsters back to life, you can check out their Kickstarter page for details before the campaign closes on August 15.
