Netflix Achieves Record Subscriber Growth, Announces Price Increase
Netflix celebrated surpassing 300 million paid subscribers for the first time, hitting a record 302 million by the end of 2024, with a remarkable 19 million additions in Q4 alone and a total of 41 million for the year. While this marks the last quarter Netflix will specifically report subscriber growth figures, the company intends to continue announcing paid membership milestones.
However, this celebratory news comes with a caveat: another price increase. This marks the latest in a series of price adjustments, following increases in 2023 and 2022, and reflects a consistent pattern of roughly $1-$2 annual increases dating back to 2014.
In a letter to shareholders, Netflix justified the price hike by citing ongoing investments in programming and a commitment to delivering increased value to subscribers. The price adjustments affect most plans in the U.S., Canada, Portugal, and Argentina, with the October 2024 guidance already anticipating these changes.
While the exact price increases weren't explicitly detailed in the shareholder letter, reports from The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg suggest the following adjustments:
A significant addition is a new "extra member with ads" plan. This allows users of the ad-supported plan to add an extra member outside their household for an additional fee—a feature previously limited to standard and premium plans.
Despite the price increases, Netflix reported strong financial results. Q4 revenue surged 16% year-over-year to $10.2 billion, mirroring the annual revenue growth to $39 billion. The company projects a 12% to 14% year-over-year revenue increase in 2025.
