  • Reports suggest a potential Overwatch MOBA spinoff or sequel

A mobile version of Overwatch has long been considered unlikely, especially after Jason Schreier's book revealed Blizzard had shelved the project. However, a new partnership between Korean developer Nexon and Blizzard could bring it back to life.

The core of the agreement revolves around publishing and development rights for a new chapter in the legendary StarCraft RTS series. Nexon outbid competitors like Krafton and Netmarble, and if confirmed, they will lead future entries in the franchise.

More surprisingly, the deal reportedly includes publishing rights for an Overwatch mobile project. This suggests the mobile port is still active and may take the form of an official MOBA-style sequel.

A New Spin

This isn’t Blizzard’s first venture into the MOBA genre, as fans may recall the prominence of Heroes of the Storm. It’s possible this Overwatch MOBA could be a mobile adaptation of Heroes of the Storm or an entirely new spinoff.

However, expectations of an “Overwatch 3” should be tempered, as such a shift seems unlikely for a franchise rooted in console and PC gaming.

Still, leaning into its MOBA influences could reinvigorate Overwatch, especially with emerging competitors like Marvel Rivals gaining traction. Blizzard and its publishing partners may need bold moves to keep this once-thriving franchise in the spotlight.
